How to download webmail attachments

The directions in this section are for web-based e-mail services, also know as webmail. These services require an online account to access them (e.g., Gmail).

Google Gmail

  1. Log into your Gmail account and then open the message that contains the attachment(s) you want to download.
  2. Any attachments is shown in the bottom-left corner of the messages body (A).
  3. To download the attachment(s), move your mouse cursor over each of them and click the download arrow that appears (B).

How to open and save webmail attachments

Different browsers use different methods for viewing and moving e-mail attachments. Once your attachment is downloaded, select your preferred browser from the list below and follow the directions.

Once the file is downloaded, it can be opened from your downloads folder.

Google Chrome

How to save offline e-mail program attachments

Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Open the e-mail message containing the attachment.
  2. Right-click on the picture or file choose Save As or Save Image.
  3. Specify the location to which you want to save the file. You may also change the file name at this point.

Microsoft Outlook

In newer versions of Outlook, such as Outlook 2010, if the attachment is a separate file instead of being pasted into the message body, you can right-click it and select Save As. You can then save the file to anywhere on your computer. If there are multiple attachments in the e-mail, you can also select the Save All Attachments option.

In older versions of Outlook before Outlook 2007, there is no Right-click to save option like the others. However, there are a few workarounds you can use to save your e-mail images and files. You may have to try more than one option depending on your version of Outlook.

Yahoo Mail Not Downloading Attachments

  1. Open the e-mail message and under the Message tab, select Other Actions, then View in Browser. This method allows you to save your attachments the same way you would with Internet e-mail (listed above).
  2. You can copy an image to the clipboard and paste it into photo editing software, such as Paint or Photoshop. Once the image is pasted, you may save it by opening the File menu, then choosing Save or Save As.
  3. Open the e-mail message and save it as an HTML file by clicking File on the top-left corner, then selecting Save As from the drop-down menu and selecting the format Web page. This method saves all the embedded pictures in one folder making it useful when you want to download multiple images from the same message.

E-mail on iPad or iPhone

If you are viewing e-mail on an iPad or iPhone and want to save an attachment, follow the steps below.

For pictures

  1. Open the e-mail message.
  2. Tap on the photo in the e-mail to view the photo fullscreen.
  3. Tap and hold your finger down on the image.
  4. In the menu that appears, select Save Image.

Images saved using this process should be accessible in the photo album on your device.

For other attachments

  1. Open the e-mail message.
  2. Tap the attachment to download it.
  3. If the attachment doesn't open on its own, you should look for it in your downloads app.

Any bright spark can download attachments from a single email in Gmail, or a bunch one at a time, but how does one download all the attachments from all the complete history of emails in Gmail to their hard drive.

  2. I'd like to be able to selectively transfer Gmails (not just the attachments) from one account to another. Say, transfer all mails with label ABC from account A to account B. You start with one account, then due to changes in purpose, may want to separate/split that account into two or more.

    • You can do this in Gmail by creating a filter. Click the gear icon (top - right), then settings, then 'Filters'. The filter can look for certain things in all the usual email fields as well as if the message has an attachment.

  3. This process (if you change the about:config settings, as mentioned in the article) will download all your email, including any attachments:
