simple problems during installation/setup. Even something as simple as how to set the printer mode to 'draft', 'normal', or 'best' was not easy

solving my issue. I then contacted HP technical support by phone and received excellent support from a knowledgeable tech that took plenty of time
to resolve my issue. Once the basic issues were resolved, the printer worked fine. I have not used scan or fax yet, but these features use similar
input /output interfaces to the print and copy functions that I have tested so I believe they will work. I'll write an update to this review if the
Fax or scan functions do not work as specified. The printer has many excellent features. It has the capability to print very fast (35PPM in black)
in draft mode, which is acceptable quality wise for most communications. It has two ink cartridge sizes (normal and XL). The normal black cartridge
prints 1000 pages. An XL black cartridge prints 2200 pages in draft mode. This compares to a Cannon printer I compared with which only printed
330 pages on a standard cartridge. The 8500 also has a very versitile two sided paper capability. It can read from a single or double sided document
and output automatically to either a single or double sided document. The large display provides an intuitive method of selecting options or
communicating with the printer.
I read in another revue that for a Mac you should get your print drivers from the Apple site, not the HP site or the CDs that come with the printer.
Apple apparently works closely with the HP developers and keeps the version of driver S/W on the apple site the latest driver HP has developed.
I did this and it worked well. It took about 4 hours (on DSL) to download the drivers but I've had no problems with those drivers so far.
